Well yes, so yesterday I moved to the newly remodeled part of the office. I'm the first person in the ecommerce group to do so. As such, since I'm completely alone with a ten mile buffer between myself and anyone else, cried havoc and let loose the dogs of war as it were and blasted the first official fart in the new area. I've declared this a free fire zone at least for a little while. No one cheek sneaks for me, no sir, at least not for the time being.
They've turned this into prime time prairie dogging territory. For those of you who haven't worked in a massive office, the act of prairie dogging is when one stands straight up in their cube to look around. Typically this happens when there's a loud noise, a shriek or a scream. There's better, more bleak views that I'll try to capture later.
There it is. My whole professional life here crammed into this tiny corner cube in the middle of an enormous maze. I'm already spilling out. That file cabinet there is one of the cheap ones that is only as deep as it is wide and doesn't extend to the back of the desk. I've already gone through a huge junk consolidation effort and I could barely cram my junk into there. I also stole whiteboards from other desks for myself and my team. They had whiteboards at desks for new hires, even had one at a printer station. They've been reappropriated with extreme prejudice.
Turns out the red flag there peeking above my desk is very helpful for actually finding my desk. Without it I'd be wandering aimlessly like some of the other lost souls here...
I just hit my junk drawer. It was amazing in there. There was so much in there that the drawer had become completely unusable. And easily 90% of the stuff in there I never use.
I know I've had that whole box of hi-liters from day one and I don't recall in all of my time here higlighting one thing. There's a tea diffuser in there that I paid $10 for that I don't use because the holes are too big and lots of tea leaves wind up in the cup. Millions of pens, connectors and whatnot. I found a very nice xacto knife in there with the cap missing. Had I been rummaging through I might have cut the bejesus out of myself.
How did this get this way? I'm kind of a hoarder. I keep everything forever in case I need it someday.
I dumped all my extra stuff in the floor supply drawer. I easily increased our overall number of supplies by at least 25%. I'm sure the next person that goes in there will have a small cow.
I saved that calculator and the 3 in 1 higlighter. One small and one large pad of post-it notes. A small pile of business cards I can't bear to part with. One small box of paper clips for presentations I may need to print out. I could probably do away with these by using the stapler at the copier. One box of push pins. I kept the two sharpies because I bought them myself. They're medium/thin tipped and great for sketching. One xacto knife. One thick ink pen for sketching, one retractable pen for meetings. Two enormous whiteboard markers. Great for brainstorming and notetaking in big rooms with lots of people. Stinky too. One tape dispenser which I could probably do away with.
Those cd-roms back there can probably go. I just need to find the right person to offload them on.
I may just get rid of the last few things after lunch, like the tape dispenser and the paper clips, maybe even the calculator and the highlighter. This is all rather exiting actually, and surprisingly fun.
I have really no space on my desk for anymore toys. I just couldn't pass up this season 7 Jean-Luc Picard. I set 'em up and just kind of dumped his accessories out back there. I've got just enough space to mouse about to the right of my keyboard. I'm not one of these "keep it in the box" cats that don't play with their toys. As soon as I get my stuff home or to my desk I tear into the box with xmas morning zeal.
I got an ipod for xmas I think at least two years ago, maybe three years ago. It was one of those co-operative group gift things. And I have to say I loved the darned thing. It was a pre-video, pre-photo, clickwheel ipod. Lately battery life had been getting pretty low which I could deal with by plugging it in when I got to work. I was considering ordering a new battery, pricing them out, when she finally died. The hard drive went. I'd turn it on and it'd rhythmically click over and over and after a few minutes a picture of a sad ipod would come up.
Just broke my heart. So I kind of held out hope, wishing for a new ipod for xmas but making plans to try to survive without one. My plan was to load a 1gb memory stick with music and load my iTunes at work with new music. This might have worked but they relocated me to a very small desk because they're remodeling my floor. My Mac is up on the shelf here and my headphone cord wouldn't reach.
I mean really it would but it's one of those phone type cords and I didn't want to stretch it all out and ruin the cord. The worst thing is the folks behind me are from a different team and they're really loud and always seem to be arguing about things. And the construction is going on about 20' behind me. At least they put up a wall. But the noise from the folks behind me along with the construction sounds were just way too much. I needed tunes. So I broke down and got a 30gb ipod.
It's got video and photos and all that jazz, displays album art and most importantly plays music. I'm pretty darned stoked. I plugged it in here, fired up itunes and checked out the tv shows section and was quite pleased to see the entire first season of Star Trek available. I'm kind of new to the whole Star Trek thing and I'm enjoying it quite immensely. I was watching three to four episodes each day of Next Generation while at home during vacation. Yes, big nerd.
Anyway last night I downloaded the very first episode of Star Trek and watched while I rode the recumbent bike. The episode was only ok but the pleasure of watching while riding the bike was huge. Time flew. And my workout was excellent. On the program I do I usually do 14 miles during an hour of intervals. While watching Star Trek on my new ipod I did 15.7 miles in an hour.
Really the ipod is the most perfect gadget for what it does. Of course the world can thank me for getting this now. I'm certain because I made this purchase that Apple will come out with some amazing new ipod in a week or two. My karmic sacrifice is your gain.
