Yeah it ended yesterday. I worked in the yard from sunup to sundown, tore out a 40 year old evergreen bush that was growing on the corner. I think we filled about 12 yard waste containers. I was completely and utterly crushed. Then today my company had "Co-Worker Appreciation Day" at Six Flags Great America up in Gurnee. We took The Girl and had a pretty good time. My ears pretty much burned off.
We split around 4pm then headed to my father in law's place, he and granny babysat the boy, took him to the milwaukee zoo for the day. He's still a little young for the rides so maybe next year. Anyway I hit the couch as I walked in and passed out. We stayed for dinner, had that wacky beercan chicken on the grill and it was absolutely fantastic. Probably the best chicken I've ever had and I need to get the recipe for it, as I'll never eat chicken any other way. So damned good in fact that we took a bunch of it home with us and I ate half a breast after we got the kids down to sleep.
And tonight, just chilling. We've got some thunderstorms rolling through, the wife is doing some sewing, and I'm editing commercials out of movies I've recorded. I got a bunch of good B horror movies that I want to check out along with some classics. The best perhaps is a childhood favorite, Red Dawn. I watched about the first 10 minutes or so and it doesn't much line up with my childhood memory at all. I think I'll save it for the weekend. I know Mike was talking about it last week, not sure if he's seen it and if he hasn't I'll drop it on DVD for him.
So yeah, two days of "rest" after my streak. I might lay off another day or two then get into a training regime for the big 10 mile race at the end of May. If not I'll blow myself to hell and gone and there'll be nothing left but skin and black goo from all the running. Who knew it'd ever come to this?
So the streak continues. The worst part of all this is trying to get up in the morning. I literally cannot get out of bed. I just want to curl up and stay under the covers. Then it takes a world of effort to get moving. When I get to work my legs are insanely stiff and I take the longest route to my desk that I can. Then I sit here for awhile and the first time I get up I'm absolutely crushed.
It's not like lifting weights muscle pain, it's completely new and odd for me. I can't say that one part is injured or sore... this is going to sound weird but it's like an odd discomfort that is for instance in my thigh but extends beyond my thigh, like an aura of discomfort. And this feeling is just everywhere.
I'm convinced that I'm over-training and that I'm going to take the weekend off. But before I go blowing my streak to hell and gone I'm going to do 3k tonight and see how I feel tomorrow morning. That is unless I'm overcome with pre-run runner's high on the way home from work and I blow 15 miles tonight.
The trip wasn't a total loss. I got two pairs of spandex shorts and a runner's camelback that holds over a liter of water. I filled the camelback up about half way, threw some shorts over my spandex (in the name of all that is decent), and hit the road.
I had the camelback pouch around back over the top of my butt. It felt horrible. It felt like I strapped a fake water-filled ass to my ass, sloshing and bouncing up and down. I almost turned around and threw it back into the yard but I thought I really needed to take it for a whole run, I mean I blew $30 bones on it and another $20 on a cleaning kit. I literally started troubleshooting on the run and the first thing I tried was to tighten the heck out of the belt which luckily worked. Perfect.
Of course it was like pea-soup fog out there and I was a million miles from thirsty. I might as well have been running through a lake. It was as useful as taking a water bottle along on a swim. I've no doubt that it'll come in handy over the next few months and I might as well start getting used to it now.
And the excellent news is I've hooked up with a pair of Voxers for a Nike+ challenge that starts 4/29. The challenge is the most kilometers over 30 days. I'm so completely stoked. My plan is to run each day to maintain my streak. The sick thing is if I really do run all 30 days and I drop 5k/day, that's 150k for the challenge which would be most nifty IMHO.
Of course I've got the big 10mi race in Chicago on 5/27. I hope I don't burn myself down before then. Only one way to find out!
That's right folks, I'm streaking. I've run two days in a row which, by my lame calculations, can be officially considered a "streak". I'm pretty stoked. I ran 5k last night, nice relaxing run. The rest of the week looks to be quite challenging as showers are forecast until the weekend, along with lower temperatures. No prob, I'll figure it out.
